Professor Iwamoto researches new materials and fabrication techniques for architectural design. Her work focuses on connecting conceptual design to fabrication. This includes using new building technologies such as computer-aided design and manufacturing tools to supplement the design process. She has built award-winning work with students using CNC laser cutting, and has completed extensive CAD/ CAM experimentation for furniture design and model making applications.
Professor Iwamoto presently teaches design studio and graduate seminars on CAD/CAM processes. Iwamoto received an MArch with Distinction from Harvard University, where she was awarded the Faculty Design Award. Her undergraduate degree is in Structural Engineering from the University of Colorado. She has taught previously at the University of Michigan and Harvard University.
Iwamoto is also a practicing architect and principal of IS.Ar IwamotoScott Architecture, a practice formed in partnership with Craig Scott in 1998. Their honors and awards include: the 2002 Architectural League of New York Young Architects Award: Material Process; First Prize in the Flemington Jewish Community Center design competition done in partnership with Robert Levit; I.D. Magazine’s Design Award; a Graham Foundation Grant for the City Space + Globalization; Boston Society of Architects Award, and an AIA Bronze Medal from the New Jersey chapter.
